......it turns cold and rainy the day my wife and I go hunting with our club at an old gold mining camp northwest of town. The rain and the cold weather delayed things for about two hours, but in the end 2/3rds of us decided to tough it out. I can't say it was the best hunt ever---no one found any coins, but that was probably more due to the chill factor more than anything else. My wife and I managed to get 4 hours of hunting in.....my two best finds were a good quality small padlock (about an inch to an inch and a half on each side and about half an inch thick) and an old two quart canteen that I found in one of the washes. Since all of the washes were plumb full of thick layers of black sand, and since the canteen was completely full of sediment (and very heavy), I'm going to figure out a way to completely clean out that canteen and then I'm going to pan the sediment from it.

As disappointing as the days finds were, it was a real good scouting trip for us. We're going to go back on a dry day and pick one of the areas with a whole lot of junk and see what we find once we clean out all the cans and such.

True.....and I even stayed out longer than all but 2 other people in our group. Like I said, my wife and I are definitely going back to the same place.....and next time we are coming back with out coins or tokens (unless we come back with nuggets instead Grin

Hope your canteen gives you some gold. The only place I've ever seen black sand was at the ocean and I actually did find some tiny gold in it and perfect little sapphire crystals. I made a trip back to the beach for more and it was either washed away or well covered with regular sand. I don't know if all black sand has sapphires in it or just happened to be in the sand I collected. Sue

From the land of the Bluenose.....at least you got out. Had the urge bigtime the other day and managed a few coins below the high water mark and dug till the tide came in. Everything else under ice and snow. Sure flet good!

Today's gorgeous....at least at the house. No telling what the weather is like at the hunt site, though. It was snowing on the mountains just north of the site yesterday. This morning the mountains due west of us (and south of where we were hunting) had a light dusting of snow (really rare for this part of Arizona). But that's the way things work out sometimes....at least I had a good time (and there's a good chance I have gold in the canteen). If I can get done with the chores, I'm going to take advantage of the sunshine and get over to a tot lot.
