Went to the woods yesterday, not much to show, but wife found what we think is an old sheep's bell. Can't identify the bell's body metal, but the designs look handmade. Still thinking how to remove the rust from the clapper. Not sure if electrolysis can affect the bell's body. Like I said, I don't know what kind of metal it is. Very nice piece though  Great

Nice bell.  Body looks to be brass or bronze of some type to me...  could be wrong!  I don't know if electrolysis would harm the body or not.  It should be okay if the bell isn't plated, but I wouldn't do it for very long to begin with.  Good luck!  Thanks for sharing.   Detecting

Thanks. It doesn't look plated but rather painted on. Most of it is gone. It could be bronze, but not sure either. Yes, if electrolysis is fine, I'd do just a few minutes and the rest of the rust I'd try to remove with Naval jelly. Undecided  Can't wait to hear how it sounds  Smiley

I found something very similar to that this spring, I'll post a pic of it when I can. Mine has no dinger in it, I assumed it was a candle sniffer, but its the same metal and does have a nice ring to it. So I put a dinger in mine lol.

Can't wait to see the pic. I have been told that those bells are made in India. What they use it for, I have no idea.

Try soaking in diesel or old motor oil. Weakens the rust for the softer brush.
