I agree the size has a lot to do with it, I have an old, cheap 80's radio shack model that found a small 14k gold hoop earing and the bounty hunter will barely pick up on it set on tone, its most sensitive to gold in the all metals setting, it will pick the earing up at about 2-3". Foiled

It's both the mass and shape of an object that determine the ability of a VLF/TR or PI machine to detect it. Your old Radio Shack machine was most likely a BFO machine. An older but still useful technology. Many pinpointers still use it.

Interesting! The cheap Radio Shack seems to be a good MD after all!

I think every bit of gold that I found was with that radio shack model its a 63-3001 model runs at 6KHz and has about 5" depth range on a quarter its main drawback for me is the length of the shaft it could be 4-6" longer.Foiled Again

They're all good in some way or other. There's no such thing as a perfect "do everything" metal detector. That's why there are so many models to choose from and so many types. We all have a ton of trouble choosing between what's available.

GD I have a question. When folks say that deep seeking machines like Mine Lab and Fisher are slow recovery, what do they really mean by that? I mean those are considered top of the line, don't they?

They're not talking about target recovery. That particular function is up to you.

All motion type detectors which require that the coil be moving to sense a target have a recovery time associated with the return signal. This translates into the beep you hear as you pass the coil over the target. If you slow down your sweep, eventually the beep will stop. At what speed it stops is determined by the recovery time. When pinpointing, the recovery time has to be extended a bit because we naturally slow down. Some detectors, like the Ace series from Garrett, have a pinpoint button which adds to the recovery time allowing the target to be sensed for a bit longer.

The circuitry to do this is not complicated but it does disable the detector from detecting a new target nearby if you are in the pinpoint mode. The high end machines have worked around this by, you guessed it, more complex circuitry. Does it help? Only a long time user of a machine that has it can tell you. My most potent machine that always brings home the bacon is my Minelab Eldorado Mk II. It doesn't even have discrimination. It's an all metal machine. Not a fancy machine at all but I recover coins and jewelry from beaches that skunk my mates. I can't tell you how many times a friend has walked up to me and said, "Don't bother. It's been hunted to death." and I bring home more than $50.

Thank you for the detailed explication. I have experienced that beep stop when I slow the swiping in trying to pinpoint the target. However, my BH Pioneer 505 is very good at bringing me very close to the target or I simply use the all metal function when in doubt.  Great
