Hi Folks. It's been a while but today I went out for a hunt. Weather in the Midwest has been appalling but Mother Nature knows what she is doing.  Undecided First, I went to watch the folks from the Midwest Historical Research Society, a metal detecting club in Chicago, whom were having their Spring Beach Hunt. This is a friendly competition in which teams compete for prizes and find seeded coins and tokens. It was fun to watch. I'm planning to join this club next month and meet new enthusiasts. I'm becoming more interested now in group hunts than being solo all the time. Anyways, their activity was at Wilmette, IL but they told me I needed a permit to MD in the village's beaches. So I went back to the beaches in Chicago where no permit is required  Great. Well, as expected the beach was packed and finding a parking spot was a struggle  Violent. I finally ended up MDing an area where people play soccer and other sports. A place I had previously detected. No problem, however. My coins were still awaiting me (about $10.00), so was also the trash, and the two stars of the day: A nice silver ring and a 1953 D wheatie. Well, I'm trying to put together the full collection of wheat pennies but just from MDing.  Keep having fun you all!  Rider

Hi! Yes the wheatie looks good. That was the second one found in that same spot. Surely, there are more and also silver coins  :- I will keep  Detecting.

We call it wheatie for fun but it is indeed a "wheat penny or cent" (due to the wheat ears on the back). At least I know these cents are worth more than their face value  Kiss I love to find and collect wheat cents because they are very hard to find (an they are disappearing from circulation) when compared to the memorial cent or the less valuable zinc one (zincoln). Actually, I have not found a lot of memorial cents lately either  Shocked Well, my hunch is that because the memorial penny, as well as the wheatie were made mostly of copper, they are probably being hoarded by people and collectors for a variety of reasons. Copper made memorial pennies are worth at least twice and a half its face value (melt value). There is a trend that some other coins (e.g., the old nickels) are disappearing and thus also hard to find. In fact, I hardly find nickels buried and I'm as happy to find them as the wheaties  Wink. See more about the value of wheaties in the link below.

Why do you keep leaving use, mate? We have to welcome you back over and over and . . .

Wait. That's it. You just want all the attention. I get it now.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I'm sorry GD. You guys are the best and that's why I always come back to this forum. I'm gonna do my best to be more consistent. Embarrassed Like I said I plan to be better organized and thus more productive in my outings by joining a club. My research shows that more and more counties in Illinois are either banning or requiring a permit to MD. Therefore, it seems that each season we have less places to freely practice our beloved hobby. Last Sunday was actually my very first outing of the year but my plan is to be more active!  Wink Thank you for your support!
