Minelab E-Trac
« on: July 19, 2010, 03:43:54 pm »
Go Up Go Down

First post will be a question.

I got a bouncy 41-43 signal on the E-Trac at 7 inches, not a great signal but one a person would dig at that depth.  Dug the plug and at 4 inches out pops a 1934 buffalo nickel, very odd as nickels usually range from 11-14.  I thought there would be another coin in the hole as this does happen and throws your signal return off.  I set the detector to all metal wide open to try and find on old nail or piece of iron, nothing there was no other target there.  Has anyone else run into this anomaly before?  Other finds on this short hunt were a 1953 Rosie 1950D wheat and a 1899 Indian.
Thanks
Clad Boy

I have to guess same as Bob, it was probably on edge.  Seems to high even for that though?

Good Luck,
Mark

That's not an anomaly. It's been known that nickel (the metal) and the shape of the coin often show as a small bit of foil or sound like a small bit of foil. The eTrac is no smarter than the human ear is. Sadly, when you allow a machine to decide for you, it's often in error.

Nickels, pulltabs and small gold rings all sound alike to a human and to a machine. Sometimes, when you eliminate pull tabs, you eliminate all three. Your loss.

While I completly agree with GoldDigger on how many targets fall in the nickel range, I still have not seen nickels come up in the silver range.  That was what Clad Boy was posting about.  While he didn't mention what the audio signal was, he questioned the Conductive number he got for the nickel.

Good Luck All,
Mark

He said nothing about silver as far as I could see. He was questioning the bouncy return. If those numbers were indicative of silver, he should probably have said so specifically because not everyone wants to own or does own an E-Trac.

Hey GoldDigger,

He didn't mention Silver, but the Conductive and Ferrous numbers he gave were for a wheat penny to silver dime range on an Etrac.  The reason it is so curious is that the Etrac is so stable on these kind of numbers, and it is a world away from the area a nickel hits.

Yeah, he could have been more specific and mentioned the difference in the smartfind areas, but he didn't.

It doesn't make your response any less valid.  I just thought you might want to know where he was coming from.

Thank you!
Mark
