OK guys & gals,

I need some basic info. I am finding some coins that are not silver or gold (probably bronze or alloys of some sort). I want to clean them so that I can read them but do not want to use abrasive agents or chemicals unnecessarily. Any suggestions? Also, if by chance I do find something gold or silver, any further suggestions? thanks, Coloma Gold

Greetings coloma gold, there are several posts on the forum regarding cleaning of coins,
use the search function in the upper right to find them.
I have found the way that works best for me is to use a tumbler with different media to clean coins.
I have not tried electrolysis yet, but that is another option for you.

RobRoy59,

Is there something else needed?  I tried the search function and identified the topic, length of history, etc but keep getting error messages... Coloma Gold

Some folks swear Olive Oil works for Bronze and Copper.

Huh?

Never tried it my self.

Hydrogen Peroxide heated up takes a bunch of gunk off them for sure.

Light Electrolysis may be your key.

Try this even on none silver coins!

Greetings coloma gold
Just type in 'coin cleaning' without the quotes and multiple posts should appear
Alternatively, click on Boards + Research and Techniques + Cleaning, Preservation, and Storage

Homefire,

Since I live in southern france, olive oil should be easy enough to find. I'll give it a try. Thanks, Coloma Gold

Olive oil or mineral oil would be my first suggestions. Main thing on either is being patient. Right now I've got some roman coins soaking in mineral oil for about 8 months. I change out the oil every so often and check on them. Get over zealous and you can never go back. I have also used electrolysis also with good results. Just keep an eye on them. Most collectors want to see patina left on the coin. Harsh cleaning can dump the value of a coin. I would only use tumbling for cleaning a common coin which is in circulation right now.

I was going to suggest olive oil also, but it has been already suggested.  It does take a lot of time!  Good luck!  Detecting

Thanks for the warning re: patience...I've never used electrolysis before. I guess I may need to check into how this is used, what kind of equipment is needed, etc. Coloma Gold

One thing the safest to start with is mineral oil. Olive oil even though not bad is slightly acidic.
