I've owned two pulse induction detectors and always disliked the idea of having to dig all those trash targets as I searched for a good target or two. Could a PI unit be built with a Notch or other discriminating circuitry that would allow a person to search for good items such as gold rings without having to dig up a bucketful of danged pulltabs or pieces of small wire, etc.

Anything is possible but PI detectors aren't built to be discriminating. They are made to find all metals.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

The DBR 2010 has a discrimination mode built in . It is the only PI detector that will do that . How do I know ? Well because I checked it with gold and silver coins .  The only thing I have to do is to  SET the detector for the metal I want do discover . The funny thing about it is that while set for gold  , it will not detect iron anymore .   Cornelius

Hi Cornelius

Could it not be the frequency that it's running at?

Regards Xavier

Thanks cornelius. The DBR 2010 sounds interesting. Who makes or sells those units?

They are not for sale . You have to build them yourself .  Cornelius

GoldDigger1950, thanks-just curious about this--I know I've always had to recover all sorts of trash along with good items on the two I had. Maybe that DBR 2010 unit is answer or maybe the newer Garrett water hunting machine-the Mark 2 ?

Mate, you won't believe it when I tell you this but any discrimination circuit will cause you to miss goodies including what you think you should find. The only way to find this out is when someone else is hunting over ground you have already covered and they find something you missed. You could always find it yourself if you have the patience to go over the same area without the discrimination set.

How do you think those of us advising you to dig everything got to believe that? We tried it. We detected the same ground with and without discrimination and found things we should have found but didn't because the discrimination is not perfect. It never will be, either. Things outside of the manufacturers' control can cause a target to be missed. A ring standing straight up and down instead of laying flat will be missed. A deep coin on an angle will be missed. A silver or gold chain will always look like aluminum foil to your detector. Very few can pick them out if you eliminate foil. Most small rings are missed with the pull tab setting.

Those kinds of targets will be missed by your machine as you blithely eliminate some trash which, by the way, could be right over the top of a target which is invisible to you until you remove it. I was at a park in Virginia one day along the James River. I was finding old iron spikes from an abandoned shipbuilding site used until the Civil War. Spike after spike came out of the ground and then I found a gold coin. Then another. In all, 3 gold coins came into my possession from a now cleared out hole because I dug all those spikes. Three beautiful Liberty Head dollar coins must have spilled from some poor boat builder's pocket and stayed there for more than 100 years until I came along.

The spikes were in pretty good shape, too, and I sold every last one of them to private collectors.
