Go Up Go Down

Recieved my detector on Sunday  a Minelab 305. Never used a md before so went down to one of my nearest beaches, had no idea what i was doing ,left the machine on factory settings only pushed the am button and off i went.I dug every target, mostly new South African coins popped out, then this strange copper coin very well worn.. Have no idea what it is,i am thinking English ,cant make out the date,,anybody got any thoughts...cant wait for the weekend to go back...
Cheers

No clue as to what your coin is.  But...   Welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon (USA).  Thank you for sharing your find and good luck and good finding when you go back out!  Detecting

Welcome , what did you clean that coin with? might have been able to tell what it was if it was cleaned properly. read the threads on cleaning your finds. Its very easy to destroy them, or destroy the value of an old coin. Copper coins are the toughest to restore and clean. They are a very soft metal that corrodes badly in most soils. I'm able to take one that looks like a corroded mess and restore them farely well now with TONS of practice.  Try googling "cleaning copper coins" and "cleaning your finds" that should give you alot of good info. Very nice finds, keep at it, and learn here, this is a great site with great people that know what there doing to help you.

here's another tip on copper coins.......save all of them and use the ones that you can tell are only worth face value to practice on. If your not sure of the value, dont clean it!

this is my last old copper I cleaned a few days ago. I soaked it in soapy water for hours, used a tootbrush (soft bristles only) on it, then boiled it for 10 minutes and still couldnt make out the date or even what it was for sure. I then used a toothpic (keeping the coin wet with water)  and under a magnifier cleaned it with that. Yes it took a very long time, but any coppers I have that may be of value, that is how I do it. After ruining more than I can count with chemicals lol.

It looks a lot like an 1895 to 1901 "Old Head" farthing, but that would be bronze instead of copper.

Hi thanks for the replys . A friend of mine looked at the coin this evening and it seems that it is not copper but bronze as BA says it is very thin but wont bend.I cleaned it a bit with brasso and can make out 189? . When it came out of the sand it had a blue/green colour to it.

If it is about 20 mm in diameter, then I'll definitely go with the Farthing id.   (and the date works).   If you follow krango's link to this page:

, you'll see a picture of the 1901 Old Head Farthing so you can compare it with what you have.
