Go Up Go Down

Was wandering around today looking for relics when i found this blast from the past, it looked like a depression in the ground which i guess it was just a deep one. threw a rock down into it took around 7 seconds for it to hit the bottom. Glad i saw it first.

Got that right Mick,
Was fairly lucky actually, because it was getting close to dark whenIfound it. I was going to stay in the area till dusk because I know it fairly well. Just I saw a storm coming from the west and decided it was time to bug out. Not the sort of thing you expect to find just outside of town. It may actually be a well, cant say for sure. There are a lot of old shafts the next mountain over. But most of us locals,( although all the exact locations are not known ) are aware the danger of them excists so are carefull in that area but that sucker is less than a km from my house in a straight line. Sitting in the middle of a paddock. I'm thinking a call to local council is probably in order as a lot of kids are starting to get around that area. Not the sort of place I would want one of my boys to end up. And now I know it's there, I feel like I should notify council. It wouldnt take much to get rid of it. Quick stick of gelignite would fix it in a hurry.

Good job you did not fall down that! Shocked

Yes, i would report it to the council or the the current land owner.. it may be part of a bigger problem if there has been mining in the area. I've seen houses disappear into holes appearing in the ground because of mining !!... it may be the mines are starting to collapse!.. don't want to scare you but you say its less than a km away .. i'd get onto them as soon as possible. .. i just hope its an old well.

Keep us posted =)

I agree Gozzo , this needs to be either filled or covered before someone comes to grief , i'd bet plenty of native animals or even stock have already .cheers Mick

Going to call council in the morning, I tried to find out who the landowner was today. Before anyone says anything about trespassing, i was not detecting on that land but using it to get to the old railway tracks beyond it. Which in Australia is not generally frowned on. I would have liked to find out who the owner is as there is a stand of hoop pines there which are not normal here, and it means they have been planted, they were popular last century as shade so im guessing there was a house there at some stage. Hopefully council might tell me as people on the neighbouring properties dont know. They were horrified when I told them what I had found as kids are seen going through there quite often on the way to the river to fish. So as much as I hate to be a snitch, I think snitching has to done i this instance it's to close to a populated area. and an accident waiting to happen. if there hasnt been one already that noone knows about.

Here's a good idea for you, mate. Build an outhouse over it. Come back in 300 years to see if it's been filled up.

Watch out for redbacks under the rim of the seat.

Of course it needs to be blocked off, but, it sure would be nice to carefully get a look inside, first. (with a security rope secured a ways away and with a buddy) Nice job and responsible action taken.
