Garrett Ace 350

Go Up Go Down

So far I have been out metal detecting two times since getting my Garrett Ace 350.  The first time I found 16 cents in clad coins. Today I found 16 cents again, also clad. I am already addicted and trying to free up as much time as possible to go hunt.  Both times out I have gone to a middle school about 5 blocks from my house.  The school was built in 1908 so I am hoping for some cool finds. So far this shotgun casing is my coolest find. My resarch shows that this model Peters shotgun shell was made between 1927 - the early 1960's.  So considing I found it on school grounds, I find it a bit intriguing.

It is but not surprising. Boys are always fascinated by ammunition. I remember taking an empty I found to school on more than one occasion. Must have been a closet NRA member even back then. Shotgun cartridges were formerly made from a cardboard tube rather than today's plastic. Whether or not that was fired (check after cleaning the primer) the case would have long ago disintegrated leaving only the brass behind. In days gone by, an empty cartridge would have been largely ignored. Even a bullet would have simply been stomped into the ground. In these days of gun hysteria, a swat team would be called out if you ever found an old, crusty and corroded .22 bullet.

That is too funny. I bet you are right. It probably was some kid bringing one to school.  Considering the locaiton of the school, that is most likely what happened. After close inspection, it has been fired. Which makes your theory even more likely GD.

Heck, when I was a kid one of my classmates regularly brought his shotgun or rifle (depending on season) to school the Friday before the first weekend on hunting season or the Monday after.   His folks were divorced so he'd have to shlep it to school so his Dad and he could leave as soon as classes were over.  Back then, no one thought twice about it even those this was a "big city" school and not a country school.

Yep. As a kid, the teacher would tell us, "Rifles in the corner, bolts open." We used to hunt varmints for the bounty that the Grange offered. What fun.
