I've been digging and sifting because there is so much iron in the ground my detector goes nuts. These are the first artifacts I have found. Not too impressive but at least now I know there is something there. The sheffield plate co. spoon dates from 1893-1914 the spark plug was first patented in 1898....Anybody know for sure who the sheffield plate co. was? The English don't claim it and its not described in the US list. Rider

Sheffield plate isn't a company, it's a process.

Jamjars, I figured that out from the net but I also found references to a company named Sheffield Plate Co. Only thing is the company is not well documented like other silverware manufactures which leads me to believe that it may not have actually been a manufacturer but a company that marketed silver plate under the name Sheffield Plate Co. This website lists it but no information.  Smiley

The two common forms of plated silver are Sheffield plate and silverplate/electroplate.
Sheffield Plate is a cheaper substitute for sterling, produced by fusing sheets of silver to the top and bottom of a sheet of copper or base metal. This 'silver sandwich' was then worked into finished pieces. At first it was only put on one side and later was on top and bottom.
Modern electroplating was invented by Italian chemist Luigi V. Brugnatelli in 1805. Brugnatelli used his colleague Alessandro Volta's invention of five years earlier, the voltaic pile, to facilitate the first electrodeposition. Unfortunately, Brugnatelli's inventions were repressed by the French Academy of Sciences and did not become used in general industry for the following thirty years.

Interesting stuff Seldom, the sterling silver manufactures in England had a problem with the 'sandwich' silver plate being passed off as sterling  so an English law was passed to prevent the makers from placing their mark on the sheffield plate and for a period they were turning out silverware with no makers mark. This worked against them because foreign makers were turning out the "sheffield plate" with their mark on it and it was selling well. They got the law repealed and the English silversmiths came out with their own marks for that kind of ware. The lesson was that the makers mark was a selling point when it comes to silverware. Still is I guess.

Xavier, the site I've been hunting was a garage/blacksmith shop around 1910. I find car parts and wagon parts. Today I found this. I think it's a wagon part.

Great finds Gambol. I have a site I am working. An old house from the early Twenties. Lots of iron but sone relics scattered in too.

Hey Seldom. Thanks for the info on silver plate. I have some marked like that so now i'll have to find out the manufacturer.
