Go Up Go Down

I was fortunate enough to find an 1875 Seated half this weekend but there was a wheat penny that was stuck to the face of the coin. After removal of the wheat, the corrosion from the wheat was stuck to the face of the half. Anyone have any thoughts on how to remove the copper corrosion from the silver half? It's been soaking in olive oil now for almost a week and it does not seem to be loosening the awful green gunk at all.

With Alcohol, Remove ALL the Oil! Soak it for a few minute, agitate a few times.

My self, I would try this method.

Prior to that, I would follow this procedure.

I had the same problem but with two buffalo nickels. I used electrolysis for one buffalo and made the mistake of giving it too much time and ruined the coin. However, when I tried electrolysis to clean an ugly looking 1917 Mercury dime encrusted to the point of almost no recognition, AND a layer of dry algae on top, it was a success. I posted the results in the cleaning systems forum. Tumbling the coin should also work well. The aluminum foil system works well but only to remove silver stain, but copper corrosion is a different situation. Good luck with any method chosen. My Merc, however, went from dull and ugly looking to shiny and beautiful  Wink
