Practice!
Took the Cortes out at first light today to go over a site that used to be a potato chip factory (I worked there for a year in the 70s) and is now a vacant lot being turned into a city park. Thought it would be good practice. It was, I learned several things. First- I really need a set of knee pads for the old tactical pants. Second- I am not near as young and limber as I used to be. Third- Heavy equipment tends to bury very large things in the ground. I got signals that would have required a real shovel (and hours) to dig.
It wasn't a total loss though. I did find a 1981 dime and an old pull tab (maybe I left it there) and I got some great practice on gound balancing and target ID.
On the way home I drove up by a lake I knew about and found sub-divisions had popped up all around it. There was this tiny park that I decided to skim over and came up with 11 more cents and a pretty cool old plane buried in the sand deep. I only spent 10 minutes there because nature was calling but I don't think it has been hunted before or often. Many targets I left in the ground due to the urgent nature of my situation.
I'll be going back when time permits. Sure didn't get rich but that was never the plan and I had a great time.
