I found this with my MXT and 6" Excellerator DD coil about 5 or 6" deep! General Washington's army was camped here in Fort Lee and I'm hoping it's from around that time. The middle piece does move about 1/4 of an inch. It looks like some patina is showing. Any experts can pinpoint this for me? Also, should I clean it or leave it as is?

EW has good advice, I wouldn't try to clean it until you figure out what it is and the the best way to clean it without causing any damage.  Wink

That be a 'nutherin that should have an expert take a look see.  Till then Matey, keep her as she be lest ye sully her.  Generally speakin' Mateys, she seem to be a bit on the delicate side to have been military issue but then maybe the quartermaster, bein a resourceful man, might have handed out what he had in supply.
