Hi All,
I have just downloaded a fix for my picture prog so I want to test it,
I am sending a few pics of a very personal item, I haven't seen one like this before.
This is a musket ball from the war of 1812 that found its mark but either was almost out of range or for some other reason never penetrated the victim, you can clearly see the imprint of the U S soldiers uniform on this ball, by its callibre the ball is "Brown Bess" 1 oz of lead and it would have left a huge bruise, this guy would have thanked his lucky stars.

I think the victim after being struck with the lead shot ended up with both ball and parts of uniform inside the body. A round lead ball would not break up hitting soft tissue. Would definitely take on the imprint of cloth before entering soft tissue, had the shot struck bone it would have been misshapen.

Everyone of the musket balls, bullets and cannon balls sure do have some crazy stories behind them!  I gave him a few civil war bullets I found recently on private land and we were talking about the damage after one is hit in battle.  I agree with gustavas when he says it ended up in the body along with parts of his uniform.  I have a friend here in N.M. who is heavy into reenactments and anything to do with the civil war history here in N.M. Can't wait to show him pics of your find.  Thanks for sharing.

That is an awsome musket ball.

It could have intered a body.

But, there were several other cloth items
besides clothing that could have been
impacted.

Many carried a heavy cloth bag for musket
balls. Horses had blankets on their backs.
Feed and grain were in cloth bags, as well
as many other commodeties. Tarps covered
all kinds of stuff on wagons. People on horse
back as well as people walking used cloth
bags to carry almost anything.

Cotton was used for everything and was
always in short supply for that reason.

They did not have 'paper or plastic'.

But, I will admit there is a good
chance it hit a personn though.

Happy Huntin,

tabdog

Hi All,
That musket ball always generates a lot of theories and as I never really looked at the dozens of impacted balls I have I will sit down one day with the big magifying glass and see if there are more like it, I know some of you must have "Chewed" musket balls now they are really tops as far as interest goes I will get them out and take a pick of them its fascinating to think they were actually chewed they didn't know about lead poisoning back then...HH    Johnnn

Johnnn, I think the kind of lead poisoning they were concerned about came from the end of a gun.  Grin
