Hi MN,
I am on the border of the US and have dozens of old US coins, how did you get the "Wheats" to look so clean mine are very dirty and I would like to get them into a presentable shape, I would also like to know what are the "Key" dates you refer to thanks........HH..........Johnnn

Johnnn, In his photos there is a picture of a 3 lb. rock tumbler. that is the way I do it too. tumble them over night in crushed glass and sand. Pick out the key dates first and clean them by hand. tumbling may reduce the value.

Johnnn, maybe they are rare coins that bring more than regular coins. You would have to ask a coin guy about that. Add soap and water to the tumbler and don't tumble silver, nickle or aluminum at the same time. Good luck.

Johnnn,

Key-date coins are ones with low mintages usually. For instance, they only minted 1,193,000 of the  1914-D wheat. But they minted 75,000,000 of the 1914-P's, which make them worth about a dollar in good condition....compared to the '14-D which sells for $214.00 in good condition. It would pay to get yourself a 2012 US Coins Red Book, or just look on EBay to see what your particular coins might be selling for.

As far as tumbling coins. I don't even use any tumbling rocks, I just let the coins clean themselves with a few drops of dish soap ! And you should tumble pennies by themselves, otherwise they will stain the silver-colored types.

And one more thing. Key-date coins should never be cleaned if possible. Collectors prefer the aged (patina) look of an old coin over a cleaned one. And you could knock hundreds of dollars off the value of a coin just by adding minute scratches due to cleaning.
