sabie.... Did the watch winder come from the same site as the earlier found watch? If so what are the odds of finding a gold watch and also a different winder at the same site?

Nice finds!

Jim

Jim [Mudflap]
The watch winder was found about 20-25 ft from the complete watch.
But another interesting find in the same area was this gold watch hand. [see piccie]
This was literally finding the needle in the haystack.
It was loose in the shale, it is so small I had difficulty picking it up with my diving gloves on so had to remove them.
Then swam back to the boat holding it between my thumb and finger and handing it to my dive buddy.

sabie: Looks like you hit a load of watch parts!!! The hand must have been a real sharp but small sounding reading. What did it sound like?

Xavier: Maybe not spares..... Maybe load of rich dudes and all the crew carried gold watches.  Wink

Jim,
I think the ship was carrying a small consignment of gold watches, the only member of the crew that would be carrying one, would be the Captain, there were a few passengers onboard, and one of them may have had a gold pocket watch but it?s more likely that it was a consignment.
Afraid my sea hunter didn?t pick this up.[watch hand]I was looking for a larger contact when I came across it.
Mind you this was still not the smallest gold find I have.

This small piece of gold tube takes the honours with just 6mm long about 1/4 of an inch. Again found in the shale.
[See pic] have no idea what it was used for.
?Gold just seems to jump out at you and says I?m over here.?

The interesting thing about gold is it never discolours like other metals, as long as it?s not contaminated by other metals that is.

All our gold has been in the sea for over 220 years and it is like it was lost yesterday.

[Xavier thanks]

Regards Sabie.

Now all you have to find is the consignment perhaps you can find the records as to what it was carrying and where it was going.

Hi Xavier,
As far as I know there was no mention of gold watches in the manifest, as with the 8 Reale coins and gold guineas.
The manifest just covered the more larger items like 56 cases of muskets/pistols etc.
The ship was on its way to India and the Far East. Afraid it only got as far as the Dorset Coast. UK before it ran into a storm and was driven into the cliffs.
I know the Captain was awarded a small space for his own bit of trading, part of the captain?s perks. So he may have been taking a few expensive items to trade with.
We do know that he owned a mansion and in today?s terms would have been classed as a millionaire.

Regards Sabie.
