Well not Happy with what we are finding here but going to keep on swinging we know we are in the right place just cant hit it yet. This is what we pulled today. Well we just found out that The button is from a rain slicker "A. J. Tower Co. Boston" circa 1890.  The button is "wire Fastened".

Hunting ghost towns can be that way.   Don't get too frustrated....just keep swinging and digging.

If you start getting frustrated, you could try what I do,
pull out a nice find from history, give it a rub for good luck,
and if that doesn't put a smile on my face, then it's time for
a break and a beer.  Taking a break is always a good thing!

Go Up Go Down

I dont have any ghost town experience at all, but I have years of locating where old homesteads were. Maybe there is something in what I look for that can help you.  I can tell you that until you figure out where the buildings were and the front and back doors to them, your just guessing. Make better 'guesses" by finding the foundations, an outhouse (those were always out the back door and down wind). Find a well, grave markers ( a church usually near), look for indications of a blacksmith shop (iron tools, metal globs, burned looking pottery stuff). Clothes line posts or the hole left by where they were (almost all of them had concrete around the posts, clothes are heavy, look for trees close enough to attach a rope between them). Any place where people would have made paths to and from the buildings. Trashy areas- the more trash  you find the more people were in that spot, unless you find the town dump which hell....that trash is our treasure now! Is the foundations buried? is it all overgrown? Look for old trees and old tree stumps ( you know there wasnt a building in that spot) and search points of interest like old trees, large rocks, scenic views, anyplace people would have went for shade or a natural place to sit. Those areas are the best for finding stuff fallen outa pockets, bags, or just plan forgotten when they left. If you find a foundation walk the outline of it, look for a cellar hole and search it, but mainly look for evidence of where the doors were, thats where your path starts to and from the clothes line, well, outhouse, whorehouse, saloon, etc... I dont know if any of that will help but thats the stuff that gets me good finds. The other thing for me is, there are so many places for me to detect here that I dont stick around if I'm not finding anything after Ive located the main things I mentioned. Its no fun to find only  junk, so I move on. But on the other hand, take the one site I'm still working on...took me forever t find the house and front and back doors, then the outhouse, a barn, and now 2 more barns, but Ive been doing it a little at a time for 3 months. Maybe go hit other stuff and do the ghost town here and there until you get it figured out? Anyway, I hate guessing where shit was, I want evidence to begin my searches. Hope it helps, good luck   Detecting
