Among the goodies that I found yesterday in the woods is this brass honorary member certificate issued by the historical United Steelworkers of America, Local 1010. I whited out the name to whom it was issued to maintain privacy. I have no idea of how old it is or if they still issue this metallic certificates. There is no much historical info online, but if anyone here knows, I'd appreciate your help. Although a great find, I'd like to return it to his truthful owner or his relatives. It needs some TLC by a professional.

Thanks Bugar. I'm writing USW Local 1010 to learn more about these certificates and try to return it to the owner. Do you happen to know any history about these certificates?

Being its an honorary membership tells me it was a certificate given to someone who had help the union out are had done a good deed for the community. Even today local unions will give honorary membership to local politicians and civil severances.
Check what city local 1010 is in then check the name against local politicians and business owners.

Local 1010 is still located in East Chicago, Indiana. I'm checking the name out, but there are various people with that same name, none of which are or were politicians or business people. However, I'm emailing Local 1010 for more info.  Wink

I found some historical information about the USW Local 1010. The story is impressive. I encourage anyone to read it.

Looks like from a web search that J.W. Abel was International Secretary in at least 1956.  dont know the term he served.

Interesting. Post the link to look at it. I also found that Abel won presidency elections in 1965

1965, I .W. Abel challenged McDonald (he was president since late 1952) for the presidency of the union. The
February 9, election was a bitter one. Voting irregularities and challenged
ballots delayed a final result until April 30. Abel won by a razor-thin
margin of 10,142 votes out of 600,678 cast.

In 1965, however, I.W. Abel challenged McDonald for the president. Abel had served as secretary-treasurer since 1952, and was a long-time McDonald supporter. But Abel strongly criticized the Human Relations Committees, promised a return to militancy in order to win higher wages and benefits for workers. The election was a bitter one. The election took place on February 9. Voting irregularities and challenged ballots delayed a final result until April 30. Abel relied heavily on voting and ballot-challenging procedures established under the relatively new Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (or "Landrum-Griffin Act"). Without the assistance of the new law, it is unclear that he would have won. But union officials and federal monitors eventually declared Abel the winner by a razor-thin margin of 10,142 votes out of 600,678 cast, and on May 20 McDonald declined to challenge the result. Over 7,000 of those votes came from Canadian locals, and Abel spent a greater amount of time than any of his predecessors protecting the interests of Canadian steelworkers locals. Abel was sworn in as USWA president on June 2, 1965.

Here is I.W. Abel's union's profile:

It seems then that the honorary certificate was given between 1965-1977, when Abel retired. Keep looking!  Wink

Here is excerpt from web page.  I read this as J.W. Abel but could be I, however this particular site lists abel as International President which is what it says on the certificate.

We then became the U.S.W.A. Local 5429. The Certificate of Charter of Affiliation hangs in the Union office today. Dated the 9th of August 1956. Signed by the following people President Charles Brown, Vice-President Kenneth Bennett, Recording Secretary Dorothy Wallace, Financial Secretary Leo Dickerson, Treasure Doris Evans, Guide Bernard Reid, Inside Guard Robert Caster, Outside Guard Raymond Kopec, International President David J Mc Donald, and International secretary J W Abel.

After further search I find both I.W. Abel and Walter J. Burke in this Time magazine article from 8-6-1965.  Here is the link:
