Bottles and pottery are the best way to date a site plus it will give you an idea of what took place there. Whiskey bottles and food bottles may indicate a camping area or rest stop. Pottery and china may indicate a long term stop with buildings maybe for meals water etc. We talk a lot about digging junk and trash but if read right that trash can tell us lots about the area.

Thank you very much i did not think of that. You get so caught up in finding things sometimes you forget the simple one's.I hit a spot on this find Friday and we pulled up a bunch of cans, i think i hit there camp all the cans were empty and tore up pretty good. The only way i have been able to date anything so far, is by the narrow gauge track and the Kilby  items I have dug up so far. The Kilby journal covers I found last week were from 1889 and off of a Kilby Lumber car so I bought a CD with the original Kilby catalog on it and that has been a great help in identifying train parts., i have sent you a picture of one of them. i have dug four so far. Thank you for your advise it means a lot to me.

Captnbad, excuse my ignorance about train parts but, what are Kilby items? By the way, nice track spikes.

Kilby was a train car manufacture back in the late 1800s.He built Lumber cars and all kind of train cars and even some train engines I just found out myself when i started digging up the train parts. Most of what i am finding on this trail are Kilby Parts from either broken lumber cars or blown train engines all back in the 1800's.It has been a real high ride for me so far and each day I go out it gets better and better, Those spikes came out clean, looks like  they drooped them out of a keg. I have dug up about 400 spikes in the last three months from 2.5" 3.50" and 4.50"in length.

Thanks for the info. I looked at track spikes online and found a site selling them as refrigerator magnets. Cool!  Cool
