Found this recently in my back yard the inscription reads "Spectemor Agendo" which is Latin for "Let us be judged by our actions", or "let us be judged by our deeds", something like that. I also found an 8k gold plate ring but the plating was peeled of so I polished down to the copper.Foiled

Well if you can find this kind of stuff in your back yard I'm sure that you must be close to a good area and if i were you I'd not venture too far.

Foiled, I'm not sure this is a uniform button, at least not from a military uniform.  It could be a blazer button, perhaps from a college fraternity or a service organization.   If it had been found in England, I'd be checking livery (house-hold staff) buttons.

Regardless, it's pretty neat.

Hello Xavier no I dont have to go too far my area is loaded with history going back to the late 1600's. The city of Lancaster, Pa.,USA was the capitol of America at one time when the British took control of Philadelphia and the US Continental army fled to Lancaster. I would love to unearth a 1794 flowing hair silver dollar or a George Washington election button I think that would make me weak at the knees!Foiled

Waterbury has a HUGE online catalog.  http://www.waterburybutton.com/cart/pc/home.asp
The reason I was questioning it is that it does not look like any US military button that I've ever seen for any Federal Branch, from at least the Civil War on  (although it could be a militia button, but then it would be older than WW1).   Any way, I searched through the catalog for as long as I could stand, starting with the military buttons.  I'm pretty sure that this is the modern version of that button

(there are a couple of other pictures of very similar buttons).  This was found in the fashion section.

Thanks BA the other button that I posted a while back I said I thought it was navy but Im pretty sure its army and they are more than likely from the same uniform being so close together one is bigger than the other so my guess is the small one is a cuff button.Foiled

I'm trying to find the other picture so I can take a look.  Another possible reason for finding the buttons so close together is that you found where a tailor or a seamstress lived.  They would have had lots of loose buttons so they could meet the needs of their clientele.
