Viking, Hafted is American blacksmith for handled. As for the ax head, When I get one that is in that shape I build a bonfire on the back lot and let it cook in the coals overnight. It has to get up to red heat for about 30 minutes. This converts the iron oxide to hematite which is very brittle and sloughs off. The next day most of the rust and dirt will be gone and cleaning it up with electrolysis is a snap. , Actually what I do is save up my old iron and do it all at once to save wood.

if you look at all the wires they are twisted to the right sending the signals crazy, he needs to twist some to the left also to help balance the interference Teach

Thanks Gambol, check out the pics. I did a quick trial of your method on the bolster next to the axe head.I found it close to the axe head and it was in the same condition. That works like a charm!
PGill thanks for your help and the chat the other night. The axe came out quite good I think. I stopped the electrolysis when it looked the way I wanted it. I don't want bright metal, its not half as pretty as the old patina.
Take a look and let me know what you guys think. And any suggestions/corrections you can think of are welcome. I'm like a kid again ....a new avenue..."Preservation" aka "finding out what the hell that is".
I don't know how old these pieces are but they sure look the part.

X that is a work of art there. It looks really professional I must say....just remember your friendly agent when you go commercial hehe! And for Pete's sake find out what happened to that machine you're waiting for. Ring a couple of necks !!!!

Viking that is a good job on the axe Great

a couple of suggestions would be to take the rust down past that light colored rust, as that rust is flake and can still be chipped off. Also do not be so heavy on the wax, it only needs to be light and invisible.... you can still see the wax buildup on the items... great job, you are doing well Clapp

Electrolysis will remove rust but not the good metal, but I agree, I like to see a coating of good rust so that it still looks old Kiss

Okay, got it. I thought I'd been a bit heavy on the wax hehe, but I figured it might be better if I was going to leave some rust.
I have another piece in the container now. I wanted to stop, because on the one side I was already through to metal and turning the piece did not seem to help get the last few rust spots off.
Anyway first attempt done, I'll get better from here.
I suppose I could warm the piece up again and then just use some tissue to blot up the excess wax....

Viking, sometimes especially with the flake type rust, it is better to just chip it off before you get to the metal Great

what I would do with the wax is to just re-heat the axe and shake off any excess wax, don't need to blot it.... Don't burn yourself though Funny

Thanks Peter, I did another piece that I cleaned completely, it seems to be a blade of some sorts and it's strangely heavy for its size.

Hi Viking

This piece that you have there looks like a part of a pick axe. The axe that you did looks very good what I do is put the piece on the wire brush to get all the loose rust off then I wax it, but here is my trick to prevent the wax from hardening before all the access wax has run off I leave the piece in the wax so that it will get as hot as the wax this way it all drips off the piece and only leaves a thin film of wax on it.
