Family finds rare, circa-1865 grenade underneath house

"There had always been a rumor that a silver treasure was buried underneath the Cappelmann family home in The Point during the Civil War. But what 11-year-old Colin Dreyden discovered last week at his grandfather's house was a Civil War-era treasure of a more explosive nature -- a 6-pound hand grenade.. . . .

"This turns out to be a pretty rare item," he said, adding very few Civil War-era hand grenades are recovered because there just weren't many of them made because of production limitations or lack of effectiveness.

The grenadier, with a lanyard tied around his wrist that was connected to the primer wire ring, would have had only five seconds after throwing the hefty shotput-like weapon to take cover before it exploded. . . . "
