Secret Treasure Hidden In Run Down Country Home

2010-04-07 07:28:17 - Ancient family treasure deliberately hidden inside a Spanish derelict country home. Thieves never knew the value of what they stole.

Discovering wrecks of the Spanish treasure fleet has for many years been the dream of numerous explorers, archeologists and would-be treasure hunters. The ships carried treasure between the New World and Spain and involved everything from gold, silver, gems, pearls, timber, to spices, sugar, tobacco and silk.

Recently in Madrid, Spain, treasure thieves voluntarily gave themselves up to the police, when their partnership drastically deteriorated. The gardener, of an old run-down house in the Catalan interior, burgled the home of his partners in crime and robbed Euro 4.5 million worth of jewels and antiques from them. When a fight broke out, the two young Romanian thieves quickly surrendered themselves to the authorities.

The prying part-time gardener discovered an unbelievable collection of antique treasure exhibited openly in glass cases, when he had peered through the windows of a dilapidated country mansion. He quickly decided to break in and take a closer look.

The thieves had no concept of the value of the stolen merchandise. ?These were inexperienced, common crooks who thought they were breaking into an old isolated house in the countryside? a police spokesman said.

The 12th century family treasure, worth approximately Euro 300 million, was concealed in a run-down country mansion, owned by wealthy aristocrat, Jaume Grau-Pla, aged 65. He only paid regular visits during summer and spent the odd weekend there. He considered nobody would dream of the old house concealing a fortune.

Only those who had been inside the house were aware of what was kept there. Many of the things are priceless. No amount of money could substitute them Grau-Pau said.

Mayor for Riudecol, Pere Solanellas, said ?This has been totally surreal, because hardly anyone here knew about the treasure? .

Eighty percent of the stolen goods have been recovered from inside an old sack concealed in a ditch in open country, not far from the home of the thieves. The gardener has completely disappeared with his ill-gotten gain.
