This is a news story about trying to determine if an earthen mound is a CW fortification.
Part I liked the best was the comparison of 2 different guys with their detectors.

Differing views emerge on whether Collierville site was Civil War fort

. . . "Someone moved a lot of dirt and it's in a square. Three sides are six to seven feet high. ... It faces the railroad tracks. It makes perfect sense and is a great location for a fort. ... They are guarding the entrance into Memphis, Germantown and Collierville to protect the Union troops." . . . .

He recalled searching the site with three others about 10 years ago and not finding anything. "But metal detectors are better now," he said.

His newer equipment beeped several times during a brief sweep. But the objects were nothing more than aluminum trash.

But another veteran Civil War artifact hunter, Charlie Wiggins of Collierville, has a gut feeling the manmade ridges are Civil War earthworks.

"I have seen, in over 30 years I've been doing this, a lot of fortifications," Wiggins said. "It's got the style, I'll put it like that."

Wiggins said he has found war relics there.

"I was able to locate three 36-caliber pistol bullets of the correct vintage out of that earthwork," he said.

"I did not hunt the banks of that earthworks. Didn't need to because I was having such luck behind it." . . . . .

Sounds like a Battery postion to me..and they had to guard the RR as that was the supply line in the CW...many raids were conducted to sever these lines.

Another great stroy from Sue....I think she missed her calling....should have been a reporter!!!

Thanks again

Dean

A battery line makes a lot of sense.  I thought, when I read it, that there are lots of detailed CW battle & route maps that would probably help if they'd just do the research.

I like stories where people find stuff. Inspires me to keep at it  Smiley Sue

Sue, these temp postitsons were everwhere..the only maps made were for those that were important or had some sort of "Battle history"  most of them were lost..this one may have been used for only a couple of weeks.so no map..or a map that has been lost...these are the kind of sites to find and hunt!!!

Very good story.  Sounds like they should give it close examination.
