This is a great story even without the gold aspect. I've traveled a bit of this route and I agree Seldom, it's a favorite. I drive by one of the Historical markers for the Steven Meeks Party often, if I get a chance I'll snap a pic of it this weekend just for grins.
I'll try to hunt down the name of the journal one of the party kept as well. He recorded daily miles and events, but not one mention of anyone finding anything strange. Of course by legend no one knew what gold looked like for sure and the "rocks" were so large it was believed they were something else. It wasn't until years later that the last remaining one being used as a doorstop was identified, at least according to one part of the legend. Good Oregon Trail history!
One of the markers along the way, a gravestone of one of the women in the party was supposedly moved. Like all good tales this ones twisted but a good read.
