A silver Thor?s hammer pendant, which has been declared Viking treasure, was found at Copgrove between Ripon and Knaresborough.

The detectorist, who found this, thought it was rubbish at first - article has a picture - only a few of these pendants from the 9-11th centuries have ever been found.

I would have thrown it into the keeper side but then into the "what the heck is it?" bucket at home. I never would have guessed it was treasure.

Good article, Sue. Thanks for the insight. That one's tucked into the memory banks. You never know. May find one in the USA some day. The Vikings were alleged to have come ashore in the northeast of North America.

Good article Sue thanks for sharing it. I've never seen a Thor's hammer so plain before, I probably wouldn't have attributed it to vikings either.

Now GD you know the history books can't have vikings running about in North America. Besides all the evidence has been debunked with the "I don't have to hear you" method  Grin

Cool article Sue but like GD it would have ended up on the floorboard of my truck as worthless.

Ok, I'm enough of a fan of Bernard Cornwall's that I probably would've said "Hey, Thor's hammer", but I would have figured it was a modern reproduction lost by a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms or someone who frequents Renaissance Festivals or battle re-enactments.

I've personally seen enough evidence of their presence in North America to be convinced of their "earlier than Columbus" arrival. The thing is, they didn't stay.

I don't blame you, I guess, but as early as the 1980s, my kids were being taught that the Vikings came first. It was mentioned to us back in the 1950s for that matter but was only later confirmed by archaeology in the 1960s.

A lot of our American history is left blank. The European cruelty towards Indians, the Indian cruelty towards the settlers and other Indians and the near mass extinction of the buffalo were all inconveniently left out of my early education.

I guess I must have been blessed with some pretty good teachers.   As bad a rap as the Texas public schools in the 60's had my teachers did a pretty good job of being even-handed and not hiding too many warts (except where the Texas Rangers were concerned.  As far as non-hispanic whites were concerned they walked on water  Smiley )     Heck we even got to hear about Jim Bowie's less than exemplary pre-Alamo sainthood past......But then again, that was back when it wasn't unusual for a couple of my Jr High class mates to bring their rifles to school the Friday before the hunting season started or sometimes the Monday after (and no one thought twice about it).
