In the early 18th century, most Delaware colonists were snapping up land far from the coast, but he decided to settle north of Rehoboth Bay, within walking distance to the beach. The salt air made some of Marsh's land unsuitable for farming, but he didn't care. His plan was to become a beachcomber and roam the sands looking for treasure of Captain William Kidd.
