Very interesting, I wonder if it may have been made for tank crews, as their early helmets had chain mail on the front to protect the mens faces...the early tanks had no springs, so the men would smash their heads on parts of the tanks when they were moving...thats why tankers are still called "zipper heads"...because of the scares left over from the stitches.
