Abandoned railroads can present lots of metal detecting opportunities, not least of which is abandoned or forgotten towns.

Here is a link that can help you find abandoned railroad right of ways;

Excellent BA! I never thought about a railroad site. I have been looking for stage routes and a couple of the ones I want the railroad was built over top. The rails were removed so in some places its gone. This will help!  Smiley Smiley

Many camps were built during the construction of the early railroads. They were used to store supplies and house the workers. Unfortunately, sometimes the blasting supplies were left behind in the camps and present a danger to anyone unlucky enough to dig into them today. I know of one such camp in the Black Hills of South Dakota. That particular camp is in a no-dig area on government ground....but you would never know that unless you talked to the local forest service ranger.

I had a site like that for southern New Mexico but lost it in a computer crash.

They had Old Areal Photos too.

Shown every whistle stop about every 7 mile.

 Shocked

In that case, the railroad was probably the El Paso and Southwestern.   If you drill down in

back they have a pretty detailed map as well as areal photos of the station areas.   The information probably came from the same sources as the site you remember.  (Douglas to Bisbee was actually a spur off of the mainline)

I think I need to start planning a trip down that way.  I've hunted along some of the Northern Arizona rails and some of the Central Arizona rails, but I haven't hit a Southern site yet.
