During the Civil War, a blockade runner was hiding near the mouth of the Steinhatchee River, when he spotted a Union gunboat. Before being captured, the runner and his crew, made it to shore and buried 140,000 dollars in gold coins. When the war ended, they returned to get their loot, only to find that their markers on the river bank had disappeared due to a flood. Location: Florida in Taylor County, on the Steinhatchee River (Where it empties into Dead Man Bay).

Thats an old one. I know a couple guys from Tampa that have been looking for it since 1978. It will probably never be found.

I have a theory as to why no one can find it at the mouth of Dead Man Bay. If the water is coming inland I have no clue, but if the water is traveling out to the ocean then that would make a lot of sense. True Gold is heavy but it too can be moved by the water current. I wonder if it got pushed out from the main land. Just a thought. Especially when the story said it was a flood that wiped out the markers.

The markers may have been on the river bank , but the treasure may have been 100- 200 ft inland ! ?
I cant say i know the area well, but the river mouth may have also moved over time.  would be would be a nice find  Cool I dont know of this GPAA book , but it also sounds interesting. is it easy to get one ?

Its a membership perk when you join. I was a member for a year.
It has lost treasures for almost every state in the United States. Kinda nice.
Not to mention all the GPAA Placer Claims that every member can go panning.

P.S. GPAA = Gold Prospectors Association of America
The publication is called GPAA Claims Club Membership Mining Guide
