Seldom I notice a book sale sign at the Brazoria County Historical Museum yesterday. I am thinking about going tomorrow after I am tired of the Galveston beaches or the rain runs me off. Hope it's still going on.
Sorry about that somehow I missed this reply prior to my Please do reply.

Sounds like I need to start a collection of his books and other writings to put with my J Frank Dobie and my Marshall Trimble (Arizona history).

Smokin_Cache and Seldom, if either of you ever make it out to the Phoenix area around Valentine's Day, let me know.   We'll catch the BIG book sale put on by the VNSA (formerly Visiting Nurses Service Auxillary) at the state fairground and then head over to Wickenburg for annual celebration of Arizona statehood they put on there.   (heck we might even be able to swing by the Vulture mine south of Wickenburg).......but getting back to shellbank, should we try to solve this one?   (and if we do, will someone pop in with very good proof that they've beat us to it  Grin )

I read it again. Why was the residue of rust mentioned? Why did he feel it noteworthy? After a storm like what was described would the grave site even survive?

What if she did have a baby and either the coin that was found (if one was found) fell from her pocket/pouch while digging and retrieving the casket?

If it was her own "bank" why was she keeping it from her husband? The story reads as if she had no reason to. Also why did she not keep up her very good banking in Galveston?

It was/isn't uncommon for women to hide money from their husbands.....lots of farm wives hid the egg and/or milk money --- just in case.    And I get the feeling she may have had some extracurricular activities going on that she didn't want her husband to get wind of (and/or she may have planned on living him at some point for who knows what reason).

A good read as always Seldom Smiley

You know me I had to poke around to see if there were any clues. I didn't find much but I did find an ad running in the 1867 Galveston Daily (several issues) for Walsh and A Pavell, and again the name on a list of unclaimed mail. Perhaps Gus was short for Augustus? hmmm

Good read on that Idaho.....since he was a German immigrant, there is a good chance is name was first name was actually August, Augustin, or Augustus  (most likely August)
