My uncle found this merc yesterday at an old park, its a 1944 W, not sure what the W means, or the value of this coin...sorry no pic yet...can someone help me out with some info, thanks...justin

The W isn't a mint mark, it is actually an A and a W intertwined.  It's the initials of the artist/designer

No, casedaddy, the designers initials on the coin are not because of the war.   It isn't uncommon to find the artist/designers initials on US coinage (not every coin has them, though).   They aren't always as large as the one on the mercury, nor are they all in the same place.   For instance, if you look at a Roosevelt dime, you'll find the initials "JS" beneath the neck (actually betweeen the left side of the date and the neckline)
