I have been Tecting' for a long time but this is my first year digging in my new local. For some weird reason every clad penny I find is in very very poor condition, and appears to be corroded from the inside out. Something in the soil here must be eating the zinc core ?? has any one ever seen this before or have any idea what is causing it ??

I'm in the Hudson Valley area in NY state... right off the thruway... about 6 miles from the famous Herkimer diamond mines...I have never seen anything like this before... Some of the clad penny's are so bad that when you pick them up they fall apart in your hands...

? think it has to do more with the cheap coinage we're using nowadays.....a lot of the recent pennies we dig up here in central AZ look a lot like that.

Hi,
I'm from NY also ( tri state area where NY,NJ,PA meet) and I find the same thing with pennies. I think it has to do with alkaline soils. I have also noticed that pennies get eaten up pretty bad where alot of fertilizer is used.

I agree with Del-Tin and BA it has to do with the Ph of the soil and the type of penny it is the zinc pennies just dont hold up like the old copper pennies. I found some that you couldnt really tell it was a penny. Foiled Again
