I was wondering if anyone might have some information about the lost Jonathan Swift silver mines. The mines were supposed to have been dug in the late 1700s somewhere between PA and NC.  I was reading a book about them which suggested that the mine was probably in the WV/KY area. 

The interesting thing to me is that the story of the Indian attacks and the loss of the mine is remarkably similar to a story handed down by my family about a lost silver mine.

The legend of Swift's silver mine is based on accounts given in the journal of an Englishman named Jonathan Swift. Swift claimed to have preceded Daniel Boone into Kentucky, coming to the region in 1760 on a series of mining expeditions. The journal recounts how a wounded bear led Swift to a vein of silver  ore in a cave, and how that for the next nine years, he made annual treks back to the site of the mine, carrying out "silver bars and minted coins. An article in an 1886 edition of Harper's Magazine tells how Swift supposedly buried a good deal of the treasure at various locations:

Hmmm... different than the version of the story I originally read.  I've been doing some reading online, and the accounts vary quite a bit.  I don't guess I'm surprised since the story is so old.   I should have Googled it before I posted :Smiley

There are half a dozen accounts about the mines. I like the one about his  journal tho I have not seen it are know anyone who has. Look over the stuff on the net then you can get down to some library research.
