A lot of older books had a latch that was used to hold the book closed. That's what it looks like to me.

I think Seldom could be right. Possibly from around 1870 + as it looks to be machine made.

Best wishes,

Christian

I think this would make a great piece of jewelry. Any idea what it's made out of? Does it have iron in it or is it brass? If it's the latter, then it would be polishable.  (Gasp) I know, but lets be practical.

Hi Technos, i'm not positive, but it seems to be made out of some sort of base metal.
There are very small traces of what i think may be the remains of it once being gilded.

Cheers  Steve

It could be some sort of pot metal (esp. if it is not magnetic), which would make it more newer than it looks (imho). But in any case, I really like this find for numerous reasons. A little piece of trash for anybody else, but a puzzle for you and me. If it was on my desk, I'd take a dremel to it, rework it a little, and then have it

gold plated
. Maybe add a couple of inexpensive gemstones. Another thing that tells you that it is more modern is that if it had been originally gold plated, chances are that it would not have worn off so much. As it is, it could have been "painted" gold.

Edit - hold that thought on plating. It really does have a nice patina in the second picture. But I would still try to find a way to incorporate it into a piece of jewelry.

What was the detector you were using, and what did it indicate as when you found it?

Technos, my detector is a tracker 1v, a fairly basic detector, it indicated a low tone, which generally means the target is a ring, pull tab, or something made of brass/copper.
As to age, well within 3 feet of it i found 2 english pennies dated 1867, & 1862, as well as numerous shards of bright blue bottle fragments.
From research, i found the site was an orphanage from the gold rush days.  Cheers  Steve
