Very nice find there! How exciting.. untouched mining area!
Oh.. I have a guess too.. It's a snarfblat (please refer to the movie called the Little Mermaid if you've never heard this before).

Hey GoldDigger;
Nice call, about as good a guess as I've heard. But wouldn't a crevice tool have a straight top so as to tap it with a hammer in tight spots? You'd think anyway.    Huh?

The one I use is "L" shaped with pointy ends on both. It's used for scraping in the crevice and making the stuff in there loose enough to be moved with water into a sluice or gathered up and panned. If you go to the GPAA site here, you'll be able to find some examples of modern day crevicing tools.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Looks a little bit like a "sticking tommy". They would ram it into the mine timber and put a candle on the other end.......although the end doesn't look right...

Mudflap, I'm thinking along the same line as you are which is why I'm going to check a book at the library that is about the various types of light and lantern holders used in the American Southwest.

Looks like ebay pricing on sticking Tommy has fluctuated greatly but varies between around 30-120 dollars! Nice find.
