John, the NYSA on the button stands for New York State Artillery.   The unit was formed sometime around 1860.

Thanks Spooky  B A .
That is a really good link and I D's the pin/button. This may have been a button but has a long brass pin attached to the back, found this near the "Peace Bridge" Buffalo Canadian side on a small patch of grass........I didn't realise it was that old.

Johnnn, I think the pin was probably added after the fact so that it could be worn as a lapel pin or tie tac by a veteran or maybe as a hairpin by a female family member.

Hi B A,
Thats what I thought also, it belonged to a vet, but is this an actual button from the C W? I think this guy/gal must have taken a break on this piece of grass on our side of the river and lost it...Johnnn

Johnnn, even though the unit was formed around that time, it doesn't mean the button is necessarily from that time period.  National Guard units are hard to track.   The unit can change designations frequently.  However, from what I've pieced together the the 7h Regiment New York National Guard existed with that designation (as either Artillery or Infantry) until 1917 when it was redesignated the 107th Infantry
