Huh? Hm, I wonder what these tags could have been good for. They look like some kind of ID tags. My first and yet only guess would be that they may have been ID tags used for cattle???

Any thoughts are most welcome.

Hi Christian,
Those look a lot like brass checks that were used in the coal mines and other places. The workers would turn them in to the guard shack or time keeper when checking in and out in the old days. I have found similar ones around old coal mining towns here. The ones I found had numbers or letters, some with the name of the company. They were approx. 1.25 inches across, some square and some round. They were also used by lumber companies, steel mills and gold mining companies many years ago. Don't know if this applies to yours, but some of mine looked very similar.

Regards,
Larry

worker chits --you come to work you picked up your chit (numbers were given to prevent "favorites" )--to show up -- you came to work and got your chit -- then when you  cut a tree down / or fulled a coal car full or whatever == you show your chit to get "credit" for the work done , at the end of the day you turned it back in --by checking the records --the bossman could see that ole #47 checked in at 8 am and left at 6 pm -- and then see how fast / much work he was doing  all day long --if the boss paid by the load he can see if the worker was slacking or busting his back --  if the boss paid by the day -- he cold see if ole #47 was "pulling his weight" or share to turn a profiet --if you "no showed" or failed to check in for work --or failed to pull the load / keep up --- in a very short time you were out of a job .
