If you put a piece of paper on the reverse side and rub charcoal on it the image of the text should become clearer. Once you can read that, you should be able to identify it.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

rubberdiver13;

There are a number of ways to take off that coating chemically, rough brushing is not the best.

Silver can be cleaned by using a small plate of aluminum, or zinc, in a dish, and covering it with washing soda dissolved in warm water. You can try CLR, or any liquid advertised as being able to remove rust and lime, with NO scrubbing. This is BASIC electrolysis, without a battery. The battery is too harsh, it needs a way to reduce the current to a tiny trickle, like a 1 megohm potentiometer, in series with the battery.

If anyone read household ammonia, here.... I lied! My expert source says a couple spoons of washing soda in a cup of hot water. The zinc or aluminum plate is essential and if you got neither, try a square of galvanized iron or pot metal, or aluminum foil. Use a glass, china or plastic container.... never metal!

Pennies can be cleaned with potato: try shredding some fresh peel and covering the pennies with it. Dont leave too long.

Does anyone, on the forum, know how to conserve wood items, as from a sunken ship??

Cheapest way, is a rich solution of water and white sugar! Ask any archaeologist.

I have to say that is the first Temperance token I have seen, although I have heard about them in the past.  Thanks for sharing.
