i don't know.....maybe.....BA was thinking it might have been used for holding the flour sack in numerous spots to evenly distribute the weight of the flour as they filled the sack to prevent tearing.  i think that's as good a guess as any I've heard so far....i really wish i could figure this one out...it's actually a pretty intriguing piece of metal.

Looks like a set of old trampoline springs, just a guess...

the springs are similar, but the hooks are not actually part of the spring, they are seperate pieces of metal inside that allow the hooks to move freely, good guess, but i'm honestly still not too sure. your guess is as good as mine.

When I was a kid, we had a metal fishing stringer with springs like that. Each of those hooks on the end would have been crimped around a large clip that looked like a giant sized snap swivel. You would open the clip and clip on the fish. The hooks on springs would keep the fish from tearing their lip when they thrashed about on the stringer. Those springs were little shock absorbers. The circular chain had a hook you could attach to your belt as you walked home with your catch from the local creek.

Someone could have removed the clips to use it for some other function or to use the clips for something else discarding the bit you have.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Someone else had mentioned a fish stringer, but i didn't give much thought to it until you just mentioned the purpose of the spring to ensure that the fish didn't tear their lips.  Cool....thanks a lot

You don't need to have snow, to have tire chains. It looks to me like the hooks are free to move around the chain loop. this would allow them to hook the chains to help secure them to the tires. As far as the size goes, they could be for a small wheeled tractor, like a garden tractor. I'm at a loss for what they could be. and I may not even be close. But I bet I "could" use the said item to tension the chains on a small tractor. good luck though in finding its real use, and be sure to let us know if you find out.

It could always be a "multi-use" item... (one of those things that someone sees and sez "Hey, I could use that to do such and such" and someone else says "Hmmm, do this and that, and it would be perfect for this other thing I need to do")
