Nice id BA. You are all over that military stuff   Smiley

Chalk it up to too many hours pouring over field manuals and studying strategy, tactics, and military history during my misspent teens.

BA is exactly right. The official name for it is a theodolite.

There are two kinds of theodolites .  One is a straight tube used for the artillary . The other is a V shaped  theodolite use in the trenches . It is safer to look over the edge then to be in direct sight of the enemy . When looking through the eye piece you had to turn the lenses so that you had an overlap of the two sights you had to start with . By reading the angle when the two sights would overlap you could read the distance on the charts .   Cornelius

Never trust Wiki. It's a good place to start but I've used a theodolite in years gone by.

BA is right.. but this is a very early model. Older models look like two periscope under an angle, so the observer can stay in relative safety of a trench and do his work. The rangefinder actually works by a method of triangulation. The distance (d) between the two lenses is known, and the angle (a) of the adjustable prismas is measured, the rest is trigonometry (tg a *d/2) .
Some models just give back the angle, some have a scale in units of lenghts.
