Brass has different mixes of copper and other metals.  But I don't understand why would some one try to sandpaper/polish gold, unless they were actually trying to make brass look like gold. Hence the rip off.  Notice my bar with numerous holes and cuts?  Well, we drilled 2 of the holes and had them assayed at the a gold jewelry manufacture. Tight security and I witnessed the test  22kt.  Went back for the sale and they switched the bar with a brass one.  My brass bar weighs in a grand total of 6.5 kg with dimensions 6.3cm x 6.5cm x 20cm.  Gold is roughly 19.3 cm2. If it was real gold , it should weigh about 16 kg

Easy math Bros.

Be careful,

Com1diver

Well Genebads, I dont think gold would Tarnish to the point where you would have to use sand paper,
and also even 9ct gold is more orange in color than that, Another thing that comes to mind is why
would a person carve the top of it like that, because its a big waste of precious metal.
and all those scratches was not done by factory tools because they have been done by hand because
the marks go in many directions with no Accuracy

I wonder what that vien would be worth, hmm that would be nice to find,
so those markings on the gold bar are cast into it and not carved?

Yes all markings with exception of the serial number would be Cast.

Serial numbers are all Individually Stamp.

On the Sumatra Bar  I notice one word missing!    LOL               GOLD!

Assay markings and weights are stamped into bullion, not ever engraved or carved. A stamped marking will displace the gold and leave an impression without changing the weight of the bar. Engraving leaves chips all over the place which affect the weight. Serial numbers and fineness gradings are always stamped into real bullion. There are some companies that sell small bullion bars with the assay and weight molded in but that's the exception, not the rule.

GD, I always wondered about how they did that,

Do they stamp them while they are still hot
or are they stamped by very high pressure,

AU, pure gold is very malleable and stamping is quite easily done cold.
