Go Up Go Down

I found this ancient looking sandstone bust in shallow water in a lake. It seems to show an ancient warrior with a helmet. He has 3 plaits. One going down each side of the head and one plait is going down on the back at the middle of his neck. He also has a necklace type of chain arround his neck. I am a bit surprised by the relatively good condition because there are quite a lot of details left like little square structures all over the helmet. Just the face is eroded or was never much more detailed.

Nice introduction, Nick. Welcome from a near neighbor in Australia.

Vanuatu is on my list of places to go for a holiday. What are the laws like there for tourists with detectors? Any restrictions? Things that need to be done beforehand? Licenses, etc.?

Hello All

Congratulations nickventure1 and welcome.

It looks like you have an amazing find there.

From the looks of things it looks like found an deity object connected to Lapita culture. If it is, then its the first stone sculpture I have ever seen of that culture and would be about 3000 years old.

Lapita is the common name of an ancient Pacific Ocean archaeological culture which is believed by many archaeologists to be the common ancestor of several cultures in Polynesia, Micronesia, and some areas of Melanesia. The archaeological culture and its characteristic pottery are named after the type site at which it was first found, Lapita, which is located on the Pacific island of New Caledonia.

Classic Lapita pottery was produced between 1350 and 750 BC in the Bismarck Archipelago. A late variety might have been produced there up to 250 BC. Local styles of Lapita pottery are found in Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Pottery persisted in Fiji, whereas it disappeared completely in other areas of Melanesia and in Siassi.

In Western Polynesia, Lapita pottery is found from 800 BC onwards in the Fiji-Samoa-Tonga area. From Tonga and Samoa, Polynesian culture spread to Eastern Polynesia areas including the Marquesas and the Society Islands, and then later to Hawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealand. However, pottery making did not persist in most of Polynesia, mainly due to the lack of suitable clay on small islands.

If you look at this picture of pottery you will see an image of a deity that looks very similar to the stone head you have found. It would interesting for you to compare the scroll work of the pottery to what you have on the stone.

Well done on an amazing find Shocked

Hardluck
