Hello All

In the far North of Australia there numerous legends of treasure and lost gold reefs. In the tiny village of Daintree there was a story a timber cutter who was out into the jungle and got lost. This was just after World war one.

The Timber cutter whose last name was Mealing wandered about the jungle hopelessly lost. He wandered around for days across the hills and creeks until he came across a outcrop of quartz. The timber getter broke off a piece of gold studded quartz. After another day he managed to find his way home.

For many years he show the locals the specimen but was never able to locate the outcrop he found when he was lost. He retold as an old man his story to a prospector in the early 1950's by the name Fred Brown.

To this day it is not known if anyone has ever rediscovered the gold rock outcrop.

Hardluck.

As I read story after story of lost mines and treasures one rule becomes quite clear. If you find something significant landmarks, direction, maps, and any other tools for relocating must be used. I've lost something myself that I was sure I could return to by memory, and though I am sure where it was in my mind, it is not in reality.   Cheesy

Neat story Hardluck Smiley

Hello Idaho Jones

Yes you are correct. I have been there myself too many times. It is so easy in a small amount of time for the vegetation to change and one gully to begin to look like another. Without a significant landmark locations can be easily lost. That is why portable GPS is so handy.

That is coming for a map and compass man. :Smiley

I never thought a gps was worth trading in my lensatic compass till I got one and started using it. It's awsome to take exact coordinants of where you were and look at it on google earth. Or program in a spot and walk right to it. Sometimes technology is sweet Smiley

Hello all

Sadly this alleged gold reef is now in a World Heritage Area. Even if it wasn't it would be like a needle in a haystack to find.

These lost treasures, lost mines and gold reefs can be very hard to find. :Smiley
