I would like to know from any member what is the  recorded , deepest coin or gold jewelery found by a standard type detector whether it be a coin detector or a nugget detector ?

                   (A) found on the beach
                   (B) found in normal soil conditions
                   (C) found in highly mineralised soil or black sand or trashy conditions

                   (1) what detector did they use
                   (2) what depth did they find the said object

Go Up Go Down

Hi aussie, Waveing Waveing
We've both got Ace 250s with stock coils 6.5 x 9inch. Detecting Detecting

Last year on vacation and only on one particular beach,
both Eileen and myself dug up many coins at 12 - 14 inches. (honestly)
That was our deepest finds ever, nearly all signals were extremely iffy
but once we started removing 2-3 inches the signals turned good.
Now that's real huntin'. Rider Rider Rider Rider Rider Rider
Unfortunately we've never had a day like that since, we think the conditions
must have been perfect. Great Great
We can get 10-12 inches from time to time.
Since we use alloy scoops Eileen has a theory about the deep finds. Idea Idea
She thinks that when we're scooping the sand out sometimes we must be
pushing the coins deeper with the front edge of the scoops.
I don't agree with that, remember we do go for the most iffy signals. Fight Fight
It seems to work for us. Victory Victory

Hope I haven't bored ya'll with the long spiel.
Circle

No Ian & Eileen  thats the sort of info Im looking for It helps me compare coils and types of detectors and soil contitions.   Maybe the sand was slightly mineralised and helped the signal response

Hallo draaiorgel.

I don't mean to be rude, but...

Well, I think Eileen is right. The ACE 250 is an excellent detector when it comes to coin hunting, even on the dry sand beach.

But is isn't capable, at least with the stock coil, to find coins that deep.

The ACE 250 with the stock coil -repeat : with the stock coil- struggles in the INGO-tests, and shouldn't be able to find a 50 eurocent deeper than 7 or 8 inches. This is very optimistic.

Not to say it's a bad detector, on the contrary, it is a good choice for dry beaches hunting, but you need larger coils to get the mentioned depths.

The ACE is one of those detectors that really performs better with a larger coil. The next Rhino model offers already a lot more possibilities than the stock one, which is not the best one garrett ever made. A SEF coil is definitely a plus, too.

That being said, and to answer the main question of the thread, I don't know, as depth is not the main thing to me. With the Minelab Quattro +1050 FBS coil, I suppose I do find coins at more than 12 inches, but to me the frequencies are more important than the depth capacities.

A coin missed at 3" by one detector and found by another, doesn't mean the second is deeper than the first, of course, but it might have another coil type and run a lower/higher frequency.

HH

I guess the smallest and deepest coin I dug was 14 inch silver dime.  It was found with my Garrett Infinium PI detector using the standard 14 x 10 Power DD Searchcoil. This was on a playing field that had been made flat for baseball &c. It had dirt added and leveled out with sod put on it many years ago.  The natural base material is highly mineralized iron red saprolite, pretty solid so the coins stop when they meet it.

would you guys think that mineralised soil or sand present in the area might help a detection response or the opposite

The opposite, IMHO.

Ground minerals have always ben a problem for metal detectors.

Minelab detectors cope with it very well (PI, BBS, FBS) but other brands do well too.

If ground minerals are a real problem in the area you search, then you're stuck with top detector models. The cheaper ones, excellent for general coin hunting, will strugge in those circumstances.

My deepest coin was at 27 cm (a Roman broncde coin) found with a GMP in the woods (thus not heavily mineralized soil)

Regards,

Christian
