Detecting  If you mean kids asking what are you doing . and what are you finding the answer is yes yes yes. if you talking about someone telling you you cant hunt in the water. that's a yes too. When I know I am right I still try and be nice. if they just will not listen to me that's its ok to hunt the water then I tell them to call the law. this is only when I know I am in the right.

I have some personal preferences when I detect the ocean beaches.

1. Wear big headphones. Anyone approaching with hassle intentions in mind gets a blank sort of stare from me as I shake my head and point to the headphones. "Can't hear you!" can be uttered if needed. I then return to working.

2. For the merely curious, keep a handful of dangerous items found - the beach is loaded with them - in a place you can easily reach. Show that and mention that you find this kind of stuff more than any other type of metal. Point to your feet and show them you are wearing dive booties. I personally always wear booties when beach detecting for that very real reason of abundant sharp metal and glass. If you like the person and want to encourage them to get into the hobby, show a few coins but never, ever show jewelry. That's a sure way to get someone to say, "Oh, wow! You found my ring!"

3. Wear sunglasses to help you in ignoring folks.

4. In practice, I begin before sunrise and work until the first beach goers arrive. I stop when the beaches are starting to fill up and leave them to their rest and relaxation. I avoid blanketed areas and areas where people are sunbathing. As I said, I am usually packing up then anyway.

Doing all that sort of avoids any hassle you might get if wandering around between the afternoon swimmers and sunbathers.

golddigger I prefer to detect at the topless beaches, that way if you don't find anything ,you got  something to look  at anyway Grin

Good plan! But the nude beaches have people without pockets as patrons.

Besides, at my age, I still look at the girls but have forgotten why.

I did some beach detecting in Oregon at Oceanside, Rockaway, and north of Seaside when I lived in that area a few years back. Never had any trouble, but those beaches usually have less people. I also tend to avoid areas where people are.
