Go Up Go Down

i went to Myrtle Beach Metal detecting. It is the off season still, but I picked the biggest hotel, and ran the perfect search grid for two hours.

Nothing turned up. I have a rule. Never turn off your detector till you get to the parking lot.
On the way back I started a random pattern. This is when I got an unusual hit on my detector. It was intermittent and crackly. I dig everything. The machine doesn't lie. I hit something big at first, and thought it was an aluminum can. The sound wasn't right, so I dug deeper.

Then I hit my cache of coins. It was a Heinz 57 ketchup bottle with 141 of the ugliest pennies I've ever seen. Some detectorist took his worst pennies, and reburied them for someone else to find. The paper note on the inside said Captain Black Beard. I wish he would have put in the date of burial.

So my wife doesn't think it was our Pirate of old that buried them, but some other Black Beard. It doesn't matter to me, it is the best treasure I've found in a few years. I can only imagine what this guy kept, if this is what he was putting back in the ground.

I will probaly put some of them back on my next trip to the beach

Too bad the kid that buried it while playin pirate will never know what happened to his treasure chest (until he looks here)....but, hey, he'll probably think someone found a copy of his map and used it.  Smiley

Great story! The pennies look like the ones I've dug here in Minnesota!
