trouble with pawn shops is you never know what your getting , if they have a curcit problem, loose wire. my thinking is their in there for a reason which I would think problems and the owner didn't know what to do with it.. most detectorist I think really have on to even their old old models,,like i said before I've got a bounty hunter over 20yrs old it found me lost of neat stuff and It's like I can't part with it it did it's job and  its retired.. and a lot of us save the old ones for back-ups or for friends to use.

Heathen would know, besides just watch Pawn stars on history channel. That tells you what you need to know about pawn shops.

Pawn shops are usually not a good place to get a detector, they wont have any manual so you will not be able to get optimal  perfomance from a machine you cant tune properly and warranty is always an issue when buying a used machine. Detecting

Without getting into whether or not a pawn shop is a good place to get a detector (a whole lot depends upon how knowledgeable YOU are and whether you insist on being able to try it),   IF you ever find yourself in a situation where you have a used detector but no manual, check here.   Our members can generally scare up manuals for most of the major brands (or at least point you in the right direction).

Personally, I'd prefer yard sales or Craig's List to a pawn shop, but you still have the same set of problems:
1) you need to know what you are looking for and have  a good idea of how it is supposed to operate.
2) you need to know what the unit cost new and what a reasonable price for a similar unit in the same condition would be now.
3) you won't have a warranty.
4) chances are good (especially with older units) you won't have a manual.

How much do you want to spend? You can get a new one for a good price these days and they come with a good warranty. Check on E-bay for used ones , you may find one there. Good Luck, and welcome from Pa.,.....DW

If you are going to buy a machine you KNOW has no warranty, make sure you get an opportunity to air test it well BEFORE you buy it, even pawn shop detectors are too expensive to buy if they don't work well
