Getting there!  I've done a little research on the subject and it looks like churches, parks, and schools are good bets.  Any other places?

Hey Desimundo,

If you are going to key on 'parks', go to the City and/or County Parks Dept. and find which parks are the oldest. Go to your local Historical Society AND any libraries in your area and suck up to the research people. Look for celebrations/parades/bi-centennials, whatever AND what and where picnicks or other such that people would do after an event. This info will also be in newspaper archives, the day before or after the parade.

In my town, after the Fourth of July parade, in 1900(quote from historical book) "The whole town would go to the grove by the river. They would have foot-races, horse races, gambling, drinking and picnicking".

It took me over a month to find the 'grove by the river' was a small portion of a big modern park. Also, have your Library/Hist.Soc. researchers find ANY defunct Horse Race/Silky tracks in your rural areas.

If you think 'Churches', go up and knock on the door of your rural Parson's rural church and ask if he knows where IN THE OLD DAYS the congregation held their Harvest-Home dinners or monthly/annual Revival meeting/suppers. Be nice-Be reverent-Comb your hair-Take a small child with you. Offer to retrieve any lost items for parishoners. If you get permission, nine times out of ten it will be in a 'Grove' from Heaven, nearby.

Think hard and expand on this. Dont just think; Schools, Churches, Parks. You can find clad anywhere but for old valuable coins you must hunt where they were taken. Look for use-dates of locations prior to clad, before 1964.....Before 1933 is better. Then you have a chance at gold.

AND, what ever you do, fill your holes and make it look as if you were never there. Permission can be taken away as well as given!!!!

Hope this helps.

Bud

The only problem around my neck of the woods is there is nothing that old around here only the Botanical  Gardens  in the middle of the city and if they caught you digging up the place they would hang you off one of their big oak trees .
The next best place is The Gold Coast , a 20 mile beach at Surfers Paradise it is a world renowend hotspot for tourists , millions from around the world go there all year through . The only trouble is not only do they have a truck mounted sand cleaner go through there at dawn every day but hundreds of detectorists hit the place every morning as well .  We have about 10000miles of beaches but most of it doesnt have any people visit . The only hope is the little country towns or the old ghost towns but you have to travel hundreds of miles to get to some of them .   But we do have some very good gold nugget areas if you want to go bush for a few weeks .

It has been said already Think Old.
I like looking for very old trees in what would have been fairly open ground 40+years ago, where some one might escape the sun.

A very popular spot is in every back yard with a  big Mango tree in it because every kid in the neighbourhood would climb the tree to get the Mangoes . Ive found a few old coins at the base of these trees.

I think you're messing with me, Aussie. There ain't a mango tree in Oregon. I'll have to go to Safeway and detect under their fruit stand.....LOL
